AN experimental vaccine has protected monkeys from an Ebola-like virus called Marburg, raising hopes that it may be possible to vaccinate people against such diseases. Researchers at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, Maryland, made a vaccine by engineering a harmless virus, the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, to contain genes from Marburg. The team says the vaccine protected all six monkeys given a lethal dose of the Marburg virus, while three unprotected monkeys died. “We have a lot of small problems to solve before we make a human vaccine, but at least now we can say we can,” says team member Alan Schmaljohn. Researchers are testing similar vaccines for other diseases,
